A fascinating story about a fabricated 9/11 survivor, the woman who fell in love with him over the Internet, famed writer Harlan Ellison, and the screenwriter of A History of Violence. It reminded me of this amazing story I read in Wired Magazine in August involving several layers of fabricated identities. (via bb)

Thanks. Those are both amazing stories, though I wish I was unaware of the fabrication element, since both stories unfold as mysteries. People are crazy. It seems that fat, old people even more so.
The whole time I read that story, I was thinking of a Harlan Ellison essay about falling in love with a woman who turned out to be a liar and a cheat and so on. And then it ended exactly the same way as that essay had-- with a flourish about recognizing evil when you run into it yourself and a picture of the woman the piece was about.
A little searching on harlanellison.com gave me the name: "Valerie". I wonder how the notoriously plagiarism-fearing Ellison felt about Olson's LA Weekly piece.
Since it was a story he knew very well Ellison would be reading, and since they are friends, perhaps it was hommage?
