Fred Phelps, leader of the cultish Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas, was recorded praising the London bombings as the manifestation of God’s wrath against the prominence of homosexuality in Britain. For those familiar with Phelps, this was not a surprising nor unusual statement.

I encountered Phelps and his followers outside of the Cambridge City Hall on May 17, 2004 at midnight. That was the moment when gay marriage first become allowable in Massachusetts. You can see one of his followers, who travelled all the way from Kansas, in the picture on the right. As you can see, they also believe that God caused 9/11 and the Columbia explosion – again, the motive was punishment for the tolerance of homosexuality.

Amen to the 1st amendment, but it sure does bring out the crazies, doesn’t it?
