The transcript of a live chat with Roger Ebert from earlier today. Those interested in what he thought of movies released during his absence will find some answers.
Ben:
what was your opinion of Children Of Men? It was my favorite movie of 2006, and I’m wondering if you got a chance to see it.Roger Ebert:
yes, I’ve seen it. I’m gradually going back and picking up some of the movies I missed, and I have a feeling it might be a Great Movie on my websiteToo bad he didn’t answer my question about Snakes on a Plane.

Starting tomorrow, over 1,000 episodes of Siskel & Ebert / Ebert & Roeper -- representing more than 5,000 movies – will be available for free at www.atthemoviestv.com. I’m looking forward to watching when Siskel and Ebert disagreed on Apocalypse Now , and the Scorsese “Best Films of the 1990’s” episode. (Scorsese loves Bottle Rocket!) (thx, jd)

Scientology: not a cult? I agree with parts of this article, especially the implications of this quote:
Religions appear strange in inverse proportion to their age.
But I’m not convinced that Scientology isn’t primarily a money-making scheme, at least among those at the highest levels.

Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni dies at 94. He was a contemporary of Bergman, but stylistically very different. I’ve seen Blow Up and L’Avventura , and am curious to see Zabriskie Point.

Film great Ingmar Bergman, director of such classics as The Seventh Seal and Persona , died today at age 89. And just this past Friday I was insisting to someone at a dinner party that he was still alive.

Governor Jim Gibbons has stated that he would sign a bill banning brothels in Nevada if it came across his desk. The earliest that that could happen is in two years, at the next legislative session, but I give legal brothels in Nevada more time than that – maybe another 10-15 years.

The Whitest official Kanye West music video, ever. Will Oldham makes a good posse of one. And I hadn’t heard of Zach Galifianakis before, but the quotes section here is hilarious. (via bb)

Errol Morris has a new blog about photography, although it could disappear behind the New York Times pay wall at any moment.
Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but there are two words that you can never apply to them: “true” and “false.”
His upcoming Abu Ghraib project will likely deal with the meaning of photography.

If you missed last night’s CNN/YouTube Democratic debate, here’s a pretty good highlight reel.

Following up a post from two weeks ago from the Democratic side, here’s a speculative shortlist of who would might be nominated next for the Supreme Court if a Republican candidate wins the presidency in 2008.

The office of Nevada governor Jim Gibbons accidently posted their email password online. Whoops. And it’s a really insecure password, too. (via ad)

Edward Lazarus on the possible effects of the 2008 election on the Supreme Court. If a Republican wins the 2008 election, the Supreme Court will likely shift greatly to the right; if a Democrat wins, expect the status quo for at least another ten years (barring any surprise deaths).
(0) #Conservative voters who are tempted to vote for a moderate Democrat, yet fear that the Supreme Court will veer left as a result, have no reason to worry. Conversely, liberal voters who are tempted to vote for a moderate Republican should know that if such a candidate wins, the Supreme Court may well veer sharply rightward.

Checkers has been mathematically solved -- indeed it’s the largest game that has been solved so far.

Salon on Wizard Rock, the movement of around 180 bands that perform songs about Harry Potter. Wizard Rock forebears (and friends of crazymonk) Harry and the Potters are discussed, as well as the Hungarian Horntails, a punk/experimental trio led by 8-year-old Darius Wilkins.

In The Narrows
This past weekend, I did the up-and-back-down version of the famous Narrows hike in Zion National Park. It was physically exhausting, since the hike involves nearly constant wading up a swift river with depths varying from shin- to thigh-high, but also immensely rewarding – especially where the river was wall-to-wall and 30 feet wide, with vertical walls towering 1500 feet above. The temperature reached over 105 degrees that day, but in the canyon it was cool and comfortable.

Well, it’s no longer hypothetical: Bush’s commutation of Libby is being used by a public defender to support his petition requesting that the Supreme Court reconsider their Booker and Rita decisions, two cases dealing with federal sentencing guidelines – the latter of which is eerily similar to Libby’s, although Rita is actually serving his term. I expect that this request will be denied, without explanation.

Uh oh. HBO execs are waffling on their original plans to wrap up the David Milch’s great Deadwood series with two movie-length episodes. With many Milch fans disappointed by John from Cincinnati (I’m supportive, but the latest episode didn’t bode well), this could lead to a subscription riot.
