An interesting speculative shortlist of who would might be nominated next for the Supreme Court if a Democratic candidate wins the presidency in 2008. Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick, Harvard Law School Dean Elena Kagan, and even Barack Obama makes the list.

Brothel advertising legal across Nevada
A small victory for the 1st amendment in Nevada: two state statutes that prohibited brothel advertising in counties where prostitution is illegal were overturned by a federal judge today. Congratulations go to the ACLU of Nevada.

A trailer for the upcoming JJ Abrams (Alias , Lost) secret and so far untitled project. It looks like a sci-fi horror movie shot in cinéma vérité style.

Today is 7/7/7: “[M]ore nuptials are expected to be exchanged today than on any other date in Las Vegas history.” I’d hate to be in Reno on 7/8/7.

Men are from Entourage , women are from Sex and the City -- at least according to this map of gender ratios of singles in US cities. Who wants to put forth an explanatory theory for the East/West divide?

The real Bowie in Vegas?
Via Robin Leach, a rumor is going around that David Bowie might become a permanent Vegas headliner. Like Richard Abowitz writes, (hey, I love Lodger and Scary Monsters , too!), Bowie staying in Vegas is unlikely because he probably couldn’t consistently fill a large venue. Despite the former glam, he’s slightly too fringe for a regular Vegas gig. Plus, would he and Iman really want to leave New York City, where Bowie is frequently spotted watching up-and-coming bands at hip clubs?

UNLV’s Center for Gaming Research has an online exhibit called 50 Years of Dining on the Las Vegas Strip, featuring Vegas restaurant menus from the past 50 years. I love how the restaurant Bacchanal in Caesar’s Place used Latin in their menus.

The commutation of Libby’s sentence sums up the Bush administration in a nutshell: unequal justice, secrecy coupled with transparent cover-ups, the unethical charade to justify the Iraq war, and a disregard for the law when convenient. Andrew Sullivan has been covering this relentlessly, and if you aren’t angry at this yet (and were not already), get reading.

To promote the upcoming Simpsons movie, twelve 7-11’s have been turned into Kwik-E-Marts, including one in Henderson, NV, not too far from where I live. Via kottke, here’s a thorough phototour of one of the stores.

Like myself, Al Gore was flying on a plane when the final episode of The Sopranos aired on HBO and was unable to watch it live. Unlike myself, Gore called in a favor with the chairman of Paramount, who supplied him with a copy of the episode that was locked in a steel lockbox and delivered on the tarmac, to be watched only on the plane.

crazymonk.org redux
After being warned by my server host that the crazymonk.org Wordpress installation was in dire need of an upgrade, I finally got to transferring all of my data from Wordpress to a Drupal installation. I was too lazy to upgrade Wordpress, and since I use Drupal everyday at my job, I’m much more likely to add new features and keep this website secure if it’s built in Drupal.
