• I’ve been having a hard time articulating why I think Paul Haggis’s plot-intertwined Crash is not as great a movie as many have made it out to be. No matter, the first in this series of letters compiled by Roger Ebert does much of the talking for me.

It’s not about the closet

Paramount has agreed not to show the Scientology/Cruise episode of South Park again, after Cruise lodged a complaint. What’s nearsighted about this article is that it presumes Cruise is upset about the “come out of the closet” aspect of the episode, when I’m pretty sure he’s upset about the staid mockery of his chosen religion.

An implosion!

According to the Review-Journal, an implosion of the 500-room hotel-tower of the Castaways Casino will happen tomorrow morning at 7am. Finally, I get my wish! A spokesperson from the casino is discouraging public viewing of the implosion, which is why I imagine they picked the 7am time. Jerks. (via movable buffet)

Syriana

I caught The New World , Terrence Malick’s latest film, this past weekend. I’ve seen two Malick films in the theater (this and The Thin Red Line) and in both instances several people walked out in the middle fustrated with being baited by a mainstream genre (war film, historical epic) only to be bored by Malick’s pensive approach (long shots of nature, no bombastic score, poetic narration). I’ve also seen Badlands , but that was at home on DVD and I didn’t walk out.

It is Stardust

Movable Buffet reports that the Stardust Casino will be demolished in 2007 to make way for Echelon Place, another megaresort. The Stardust is the place that the movie Casino is about. No word yet whether it will be imploded – I’m not leaving this city until I see an implosioin, dammit!

Frank Zappa on Crossfire

A video from 1986 of Frank Zappa discussing censorship on the show Crossfire. Apparently, this has been around for awhile, but I had never seen it until today. Watch it to see how far John Lofton is willing to go to censor music and to see Zappa’s dismissive responses. Simultaneously scary and funny.

Moving On

So the activity on this blog is about to slow down dramatically (as if it hadn’t already with the recent holiday-related silence). The reason: I recently was hired for a full-time+ gig as the webmaster for the Committee to Regulate and Control Marijuana, here in Las Vegas, Nevada. The CRCM is working toward passing an inititiative on the ballot this upcoming November – you can read about it here. This is my first time working on a political campaign, and I expect it to keep me very busy for the next eleven months.
