i, for one, had no idea that david foster wallace looked like a washed-up tennis star.

as for being labeled as a writer, the best line i ever heard was from robert cohen (inspired sleep), when asked how he felt about being called "a jewish writer":

No writer wants any kind of adjective in front of the word "writer," when someone's describing them. Except maybe "living."
