For those of you without HBO: as of this season, the network is providing full podcasts of Real Time with Bill Maher on iTunes. I am of the opinion that Real Time has the highest level of political debate anywhere on television currently, although sometimes the makeup of the panel leads to a dud. (Please, no more Robin Williams, but Ben Affleck is surprisingly good.)

I have a feeling Ben's going to run for office someday.
This is the premise of about half the TV shows in France and I've always enjoyed the range of issues and people they bring to the debates. So you'd have a Parliamentary member with a rock star, footballer and media mogul (maybe not that diverse in one sitting, but just about) and they talk about everything from politics and the latest movie to education and sex. It's awesome in France because intellectualism is respected, therefore there is nothing incongruous about seeing a film star or footballer have actual well-articulated opinions. These are mainstream primetime shows that everyone watches and discusses. I've always thought that was lacking here with most mass entertainment being about the dumbing down of America. We don't even like our politicians to be intelligent.
