Lessig: what Ted Stevens did is wrong, but it isn’t that much different than the way campaign contributions work.

[W]hile it is a crime for VECO Corporation to pay to have Stevens’ house renovated, there’s no problem with VECO’s PAC and senior executives giving Stevens’ campaign many times more than that which Stevens’ is then free to use to fly to a resort in Montana, or entertain senior executives at DC’s most expensive restaurants.

I know Dems do just as many bad things, but I feel genuinely sorry for Republicans who are principled this year (meaning reasonable human beings and politicians-- not the ignoramuses). Their party and leadership is in shambles and they are most likely taking a beating in this next round of elections. Not too different from the Democrats in 2004 (or was it 2002)? We need a viable third party to shake things up. Hard to imagine what that party could center around though, as the green party was a good idea but is no longer viable.

You could try to rally pro-choice Republicans around a standard bearer.

The problem is that it seems as though modern third parties can't exist without a single strong leader, and will fail as soon as that leader is gone.

I think you'd enjoy this video of Ted Steven's conversation caught on FBI wiretap:

If I'd only listened to you, Monk, I would have spared myself a minute and six seconds of not laughing...
