The trailer for Speed Racer, the Wachowskis’s directorial follow-up to The Matrix trilogy. As kottke says, the courses are reminiscent of Mario Kart on GameCube, but the style also reminds me of Luc Besson’s The Fifth Element.

Ah, my good friend was the coordinator for the costume dept. on this. When I was in Berlin this summer visiting her we were in the tiergarten or something and bumped into Christina Ricci and the male lead. They did not say hi to us, but Christina Ricci is one of the smallest people I've ever seen.
Fifth Element is a good call. Ricci has one of the largest heads for a small person I have ever seen.
Her head to body ratio is off the charts.
Looks cool stylistically-- but the plot looks a tad dull and John Goodman seems out of place.
Anyone going to see the Golden Compass? I noticed Ebert was one of the few reviewers to give it a positive review, but I have not read what he wrote yet.
I'm going to see the Golden Compass -- I'm a big fan of the books, although I'm aware that there are major differences.
Turan from the LA Times was fairly complimentary as well.
I hope Golden Compass does well. I think the second movie would rock and I am interested in seeing what they would do with the third film, seeing that the third book is kind of a disaster. And Goodman looks like an older Mario.
The trailer looks awful. I will see it, but I think it's going to flop.
Oh, this won't flop. The adolescent factor is way too high, plus it'll be marketed to all hell. But I agree that it doesn't look very good.
For Golden Compass.
Oh. The first trailer was weak, later trailers have been better. I don't think Golden Compass will flop, but I don't think it'll be a huge hit either.
Not to get all industry on you, but the film is not tracking well and it cost a fortune to make. Not a good mix.
i thought the overrated wachowski's directed V for Vendetta?
remember that first matrix movie? it was awesome! then none of that other stuff ever happened.
Nah, they just produced V for Vendetta. The director was James McTeigue.
just watched the trailer. let's take a look at the "certain to be a flop checklist" shall we? (with apologies to bill simmons):
hollywood wunderkind(s) belated follow-up to hugely successful but controversial series? (CHECK)
improbable tv-show-to-movie transition?(CHECK)
bonus points for the original series being a cult cartoon? (CHECK)
double points for original series being a cult cartoon FROM JAPAN? (CHECK!)
star-studded cast limping through hackneyed dialogue? (CHECK)
special effects wad blown in trailer? (CHECK)
this thing's gonna S-U-C-K.
hey, you know who's great? eddie izzard.
hey, you know what i wish would come back for season 2? the riches.
Just watched the Speed Racer trailer, the dialogue seems awful.
now i can finally offload the "limited edition" speed racer print that i bought while drunk at a cruise ship auction many years back.
nach, you ain't the only dude who bought a speed racer item while drunk. no dude is less proud than me.
Nacho's auction was a scam:

I didn't know that "what does god need with a starship" was something commonly referenced.
Only by me.
Also, this doesn't seem to flow from the previous conversation.
